What a hardware wallet does

A hardware wallet keeps the keys used to authorise cryptocurrency transactions inside a dedicated device. The goal is to reduce exposure to malware on a general-purpose phone or computer.

The coins do not sit inside the device; they remain recorded on their relevant blockchain. The wallet protects the private keys and signs transactions when you approve them.

What it cannot protect

A hardware wallet cannot make a dishonest transaction safe. If you approve the wrong address, interact with a malicious contract or reveal the recovery phrase, the device may not be able to prevent loss.

Read the address and transaction information on the hardware wallet’s own screen rather than trusting only what appears on a connected computer.

Recovery phrase rules

The recovery phrase can recreate control of the wallet. Anyone who obtains it can usually take the assets without the physical device, password or permission.

  • Never enter the recovery phrase into a website, message, form or unsolicited support tool.
  • Never photograph it or save it in ordinary cloud storage.
  • Store the backup offline in a location protected from theft, fire, water and accidental disposal.
  • Test the official recovery process with care before relying on the wallet for significant value.

Buy through a trustworthy route

Use the manufacturer or an authorised seller, check packaging and initialise the wallet yourself. A device that arrives with a recovery phrase already written down should not be trusted.
